Patrick Brown asked: “will the Premier do the right thing and stop this hydro rate hike?”
Fact: The independent Ontario Energy Board is responsible for decisions around rate applications. The Board works hard to keep rates as low as possible while ensuring the system can run properly and be financially viable. Utilities rarely get all they ask for, and sometimes the Board rejects the application outright.
Regardless of the outcome of this application process, electricity bills for residential consumers and as many as half a million small businesses and farms will be reduced by 25% on average, starting July 1st.
Patrick Brown claimed: “Now there's a rate increase $141 that Ontario families can't pay and the Premier's saying nothing.”
Fact: Our Fair Hydro Plan provides immediate relief in the short-term by reducing electricity bills by 25% on average for all Ontarians - up to 40-50% if you’re rural or low-income. It then holds rates to inflation for the following 4 years, managing affordability in the medium-term. Our 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan will show Ontario families and businesses a snapshot of our future energy system, including supply, demand, and affordability, over the longer term.
Fact: His party voted against Ontario’s Fair Hydro Plan, saying “no” to a 25% on average reduction for families, small businesses and farms.
Fact: Patrick Brown has no plan to lower hydro rates.
