Patrick Brown said: “You know, the Hydro One fire sale, which I opposed, was supposed to go towards infrastructure—not a penny from that fire sale has gone to infrastructure”
Fact: Every dollar from Hydro One will be invested in new infrastructure projects like GO Regional Express Rail, Mississauga and Hamilton LRT’s and the new connecting links program. (Source: https://news.ontario.ca/mof/en/2015/04/the-trillium-trust-and-moving-ontario-forward.html).
Patrick Brown said: “And it’s wrong so the fact that we continue to give these contracts out, Wynne did it last year now she’s doing it again”
Fact: We announced last fall that we were suspending procurement of new large renewable projects to avoid $3.8 billion in costs
Patrick Brown said: “I would stop the fire sale so we can have some control over rate increases.
Fact: Energy rates will continue to be set by the independent Ontario Energy Board, who has a mandate to protect ratepayers. So Brown needs to explain what he means (Source: http://www.ontarioenergyboard.ca/OEB/Industry/Regulatory+Proceedings/Applications+Before+the+Board )
Patrick Brown said: “I want to make sure every precious dollar we have goes to nurses, doctors and all the healthcare works to actually care for patients”
Fact: 26,000 more nurses are working in Ontario since we took office and our 2016 budget invested an extra $1 Billion in health care.
Patrick Brown said: “In the Samsung deal it came out that there was an exit clause for a billion and a half of surplus electricity” […]” they decided not to take the exit clause”
Fact: We renegotiated the Green Energy Investment Agreement with Samsung, reducing contract costs by $3.7 billion.
Patrick Brown said: “Donald Trump isn’t making America great right now Kathleen Wynne is making America great”
Fact: If we look at employment growth since 2009, Ontario has seen growth of (9.4%), with Michigan (8.8%), Pennsylvania (6.6%) and New York (2.4%) all trailing behind (Source: Statistics Canada, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics and Ontario Ministry of Finance).
Patrick Brown said: “She’s the one giving free electricity to Michigan, to Pennsylvania, to New York” […] “we have given away since 2009, $6 billion dollars in surplus electricity.”
Fact: The last time the provincial Conservatives were in power, they spent $900 million importing electricity over two years just to keep the lights on. When we came into office, we inherited their dirty, unreliable electricity system and cleaned it up. Now, thanks to those necessary investments, Ontario families and businesses know the lights will go on and stay on when they need them to. Given our position of strength in terms, Ontario is a net exporter now, benefitting ratepayers to the tune of $230 million last year (as estimated by the Independent Electricity System Operator).
Patrick Brown said: “Our own water power, we’re not using…we’re mothballing hydroelectric projects in this province”
Fact: In 2010, hydro power made up 20.4% of Ontario’s power output. In 2015, it made up 24%. The IESO’s 18 month outlook expects this number to increase to 25.5% of our energy production. Patrick Brown said: “I’m tired of having the government make promises on infrastructure that are 10 years out”
Fact: Patrick needs to understand that infrastructure investments, especially the large ones that impact our lives positively like hospitals and transit, take time and need planning. Brown has previously said “if you are Premier of Ontario and you are going to make an infrastructure commitment it should be within your mandate”. (Source: Patrick Brown, Building Trade Council Speech, Oct 14 2016) So that means no new subways, no LRT’s and no major infrastructure projects. Tell us how that makes any sense.
